One Mile Lake Nature Centre
The One Mile Lake Nature Centre is a Stewardship Pemberton Society initiative that originated out of a need to replace the Birkenhead Riverhatchery after it was decimated due to flooding. After years of hard work and fundraising, the building is now operational. Programming and building use will continue to grow based on community needs and feedback.
The Centre was built with ecological integrity in mind. Using local contractors and hundreds of volunteer hours, the Centre boasts innovative technologies such as solar power, composting toilets, rainwater catchment, recycled materials, and a helical screw foundation to reduce the size of our ecological footprint. In 2011, the Centre was awarded a Union of British Columbia Municipalities Community Excellence Award.
The Centre is also equipped with a small educational hatchery that is anticipated to be up and running in the future.
